What is DTG Printing?

If you've ever held a custom t-shirt and noticed how the print felt like part of the fabric - smooth, breathable, with zero crinkle or heavy plastic feel - that was almost certainly made with DTG (Direct-to-Garment) printing.

Direct-to-garment is the closest thing the modern apparel industry has to printing a high-resolution photo on paper. Here is a breakdown of how it works, what it does best, and why we use it.

How DTG Printing Works

A DTG machine is essentially a commercial, large-format inkjet printer modified for apparel. Instead of paper, a garment is loaded onto a flat platen and printed directly.

• Pre-Treatment: For dark or black garments, a non-toxic liquid pre-treatment solution is sprayed onto the fabric. This creates a bonding layer so the white base ink doesn't sink in and disappear.
• Direct Printing: The print heads glide across the fabric, depositing water-based pigment inks directly into the cotton fibers.
• Heat Curing: The printed garment passes through a heat tunnel or heat press. This permanently locks the ink into the weave.

What DTG Excels At

• Unmatched Softness: Because water-based inks bond inside the fibers, the fabric stays breathable and the print is imperceptible to the touch.
• Complex Detail: Photorealistic images, color gradients, and fine-line artwork print with crisp clarity.
• Zero Setups or Minimums: Unlike traditional screen printing, there are no screens to expose or burn. Printing one shirt costs the exact same per unit as printing a hundred.

The First-Wash Pre-Treat Effect on Dark Tees

If you unbox a dark-coloured DTG garment, you might notice a subtle vinegary smell or a faint sheen around the design. Don't worry - this is completely normal. It is simply residual pre-treatment solution from the printing process. It washes out completely after the very first cold wash, leaving the print soft and vibrant.
